In Kinyarwanda, the native language of Rwanda, tuwurinde means ‘let’s protect it’. Our mission at Tuwurinde Ltd is to improve lives by developing a revenue stream through manufacturing and export of made-in-Rwanda helmets that will decrease road traffic injuries across the African continent. If prevention fails, we will improve the medical care of survivors by extending emergency specialists with telemedicine and training healthcare providers.

Informal interviews of helmet owners revealed that some of these had been in use for up to 17 years. Owners reported the high cost to replace helmets limited them, as ‘repairs’ cost a fraction of a new helmet purchase. Shells are glued back together, liners replaced with foam and new paint on the shell are common repairs. These repairs render the helmet as useful as a hat in protecting the head against impacts.

Net operating income of the factory and sale profit are channeled to campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the community and educational projects of traffic safety through the operations of AIP Foundation in Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia.
Protec has currently recruited 300 staff members, including 200 workers who directly work on site, one third of whom are the handicapped working at assembly chain of the factory.

This 3 year, $300,000 USD grant will build a foundation for sustainable, local manufacturing of helmets. Complementary support is offered by the FIA Foundation to equip the Rwanda Standards Board with helmet impact testing equipment from AD Engineering
